Devyani case: US initiates inter-agency review

Washington, Dec 30: Cornered in Devyani Khobragade case, US has initiated inter-agency review. Reportedly, India's tough stand in the case has shocked the US authorities.

Meanwhile, India questioned 'commercial activities' in the US embassy which could lead to a freeze on duty-free imports. The authorities feel that duty-free import facilities are being misused by "non-diplomatic personnel", including private firms and friends of the US embassy.

Last week, India had cancelled ID cards issued to US diplomats in India and their family members and curtailed all privileges allotted to them. India cited that no such privilege is available to diplomats working in the US.

Devyani Khobragade, an Indian diplomat in New York, was arrested on December 12 on charges of visa fraud. She was forced to undergo strip-search and was ill-treated at the prison.
