Locals Oppose Measurement of Gram Sabha Land in Fatehpur Village
The small village of Fatehpur in Deoria/Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, has been the site of a brutal land dispute that claimed six lives earlier this month. On October 2nd, former district panchayat member Prem Yadav was murdered by Satyaprakash Dubey and his family over a contentious plot of gram sabha land. This incident sparked off a cycle of violence and retaliation which resulted in the deaths of Dubey and five members of his family.
Dispute Over Gram Sabha Land

Prem Chand Yadav was accused by Satyaprakash Dubey of illegally constructing his house on gram sabha land. The Revenue department team visited Fatehpur village to investigate this allegation six days after the violent incident. However, their attempt to measure the disputed property was met with resistance from local villagers who were supporters or relatives of Yadav.
Imposition Of Section 144
In an effort to maintain law and order following these tragic events, authorities imposed Section 144 in the Fatehpur Gram Sabha area of Rudrapur with immediate effect for one month. This legal provision prohibits assembly or gathering of more than four people in an area. Heavy police force has also been deployed in the village to prevent any further escalation or outbreak of violence.
A Grim Tale Of Retaliation
The initial attack on Prem Yadav took place when he went to visit Satyaprakash Dubey's house. Armed with sharp-edged weapons, Dubey and his family attacked Yadav leading to his death. In response, supporters from Abhaipur loyal to Yadav launched a violent counter-attack on Dubey's residence resulting in him and five members from his family including children being killed.
Land Disputes And Violence: A Recurring Issue
Land disputes have been a recurring cause of violence in many rural parts of India. The lack of clear land titles and boundaries, coupled with the absence of an efficient dispute resolution mechanism often leads to such unfortunate incidents. In this context, the role of revenue department becomes crucial as they are responsible for ensuring that land rights are respected and any disputes arising out of them are resolved amicably.
In conclusion, the incident at Fatehpur village is a stark reminder of how unresolved land disputes can lead to tragic consequences. It underscores the urgent need for effective mechanisms to resolve such conflicts peacefully without resorting to violence. Furthermore, it highlights the importance of government departments like Revenue in maintaining law and order while dealing with contentious issues related to property ownership.
