Demonstration Demands Justice for Doctor's Rape and Murder at Kolkata Durga Puja Pandal
A demonstration erupted at a prominent Durga Puja pandal in Kolkata, sparked by the rape and murder of a doctor at RG Kar hospital. This incident occurred on Tuesday evening at the Santosh Mitra Square puja pandal, located in the city's centre. The pandal, designed to resemble the Las Vegas Sphere, witnessed a group chanting slogans like "We want justice" and "Justice for RG Kar," as people crowded to view the idols.

The protests have gained momentum since the doctor's body was discovered at the hospital on August 9. Over the past two months, these demonstrations have spread throughout the state. The Santosh Mitra Square incident is notable because it is the only major community Durga Puja in Kolkata linked to a BJP leader, while others are led by TMC leaders.
Community Reactions and Organisers' Stance
Sajal Ghosh, the puja committee's secretary and a BJP leader, commented on the situation. He stated that many visitors have been chanting slogans daily at the pandal, demanding justice for the doctor. "People are free to raise slogans. It is people's festival where the pain and anguish of the people should not be throttled," Ghosh said. He emphasised their commitment to allowing people to express their grievances.
Ghosh further explained their approach compared to other pujas in south Kolkata. "We believe in enabling people to make their voices heard. Like some other pujas in south Kolkata, we don't believe in raising the volume of the sound system to drown the people's voices. We believe in hearing people's voices," he added.
Anticipated Protests and Police Preparations
Before the festival began, some organisers had voiced concerns about potential protests during a meeting with police officials. Despite these apprehensions, people have already started visiting pandals across Kolkata even before Durga Puja rituals officially commence.
The viral video of the protest at Santosh Mitra Square has further amplified public attention on this issue. The incident underscores ongoing tensions and demands for justice within the community as they gather for one of their most significant cultural celebrations.
The events at Santosh Mitra Square highlight a broader societal demand for accountability and justice. As Kolkata's residents continue to visit pandals, these demonstrations serve as a reminder of unresolved issues within their community.
