'Demonetisation is a scam': Rahul Gandhi

Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday dubbed the government's demonetisation initiative as a "scam".

New Delhi, Nov 23: Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday dubbed the government's demonetisation initiative as a "scam" and demanded a Joint Parliamentary Committee's (JPC) probe in the matter.

He further described Prime Minister's announcement to scrap higher value currency notes as the "biggest impromptu financial experiment". He also accused Modi of informing his friends about it.

"We feel that this decision is a scam... The Prime Minister had informed his close friends about this before announcement...We want JPC probe in this matter," he told reporters outside Parliament.

Rahul also accussed the Prime Minister of evading the debate on demonetisation by not coming to the parliament.

On Tuesday, CPI (M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury said the opposition is considering moving a contempt notice against Narendra Modi for refusing to answere in the Parliament.

Yechury said Modi must participate in the debate on demonetisation as it was he who made the announcement.

arlier this month, the government demonetised currency notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000, replacing them with new Rs 500 and Rs 2,000 bills in an effort to root out black money and terror funding.

The decision has had a severe impact on the lives of the people as massive cash crunch hit the entire nation.

People faced grave incovenience as everyone queued up in front of banks and ATMs to get hold of valid currency notes.
