Delhi Weather: IndiGo, Air India Issue Advisory For Passengers

With the Delhi NCR region being battered by heavy rainfall and a significant storm on the evening of Wednesday, 21 May 2025, passengers flying via IndiGo and Air India were advised to stay informed about their flight statuses. The inclement weather, characterized by severe thunderstorms, resulted in disruptions to the usual flight schedules, particularly affecting areas such as Delhi, Chandigarh, and Kolkata. IndiGo, a leading low-cost carrier, highlighted that while efforts are made to adhere to the schedule, some delays are inevitable due to these weather phenomena being beyond their control.

Delhi Airport also joined the airlines in issuing a cautionary message at 8:30 p.m. (IST), warning that flight operations might face interruptions owing to the adverse weather conditions. They also reassured passengers that their ground teams are diligently working to minimize inconveniences and ensure a smooth travel experience during this turbulent period.

The advice from both airlines was clear: passengers should verify their flight details before setting off for the airport and allocate additional time for their journey to account for possible waterlogging and traffic congestion. IndiGo specifically urged travelers to use their website or app for the latest updates on flight schedules and to plan for extra commuting time as the roads en route to the airport could be severely affected.

In a display of the storm's intensity, the capital city witnessed a sudden onslaught of a dust storm, hailstorm, and substantial rainfall, with wind speeds soaring up to 79 kmph. This unexpected spell of weather provided a respite from the preceding heatwave but also led to widespread disruptions. Visuals of the heavy downpour drenching Delhi's Airport Terminal 3 (T-3) and various other parts of the city were shared by news agency PTI, while Mint journalists reported experiencing loud thunderclaps and vivid lightning flashes.

Despite the India Meteorological Department (IMD) not issuing a red alert, the forecast did predict moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, dust storms, and gusty winds across several districts in Delhi. The sudden weather shift prompted people to share their experiences of the dust storm on social media, capturing the moment when the serene skies turned tumultuous.
