Delhi L-G Assures AAP of Efforts to Alleviate Water Crisis

Delhi Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena recently engaged with an Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) delegation to discuss the pressing water crisis in the national capital. The meeting, held on Sunday, saw AAP representatives urging the Lieutenant Governor to negotiate with the Haryana Government for an additional supply of water to mitigate the city's shortfall until the anticipated rainfall provides relief. The delegation, comprising MPs, MLAs, and a Cabinet Minister, underscored a significant deficit of 113 million gallons per day (MGD) from Haryana, impacting countless residents.

Efforts to Resolve Delhi Water Crisis

In response to the concerns raised, Saxena assured the AAP members of his commitment to addressing the issue. He emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts over confrontational tactics to ensure a swift resolution. The Lieutenant Governor highlighted that the allocation of Yamuna water among Delhi, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, and other neighboring states is governed by the Upper Yamuna River Board and is due for reassessment in 2025. Furthermore, Saxena's conversation with the Haryana Chief Minister at 4 pm yielded a positive outlook, with assurances of earnest efforts to support Delhi during this challenging period.

The Supreme Court's suggestion that Delhi could request additional water from Haryana on humanitarian grounds was also discussed. However, Saxena pointed out that such measures would be more effective in an environment marked by cooperation and friendly dialogue rather than accusations and blame. He also noted the universal impact of the heatwave across states, exacerbating water demands due to population increases.

The AAP delegation, including notable figures such as Rajya Sabha MPs Sanjay Singh and N D Gupta, Cabinet Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj, and MLAs Dilip Pandey, Somnath Bharti, Rajesh Gupta, and Rituraj Jha, presented a united front on the issue. They highlighted the immediate need for Haryana to release the full share of water owed to Delhi to alleviate the hardships faced by its residents.

Delhi Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj conveyed optimism about imminent rainfall alleviating the crisis. With rains starting in Himachal Pradesh and expected in Delhi within a week, Bharadwaj expressed hope that Haryana would soon be unable to withhold water even if it intended to. The delegation's plea to Saxena was clear: secure Delhi's water share from Haryana for at least a week until natural rainfall can replenish the city's resources.

This meeting underscores a critical juncture for Delhi as it navigates through its water scarcity challenges. With both state and central government representatives engaging in dialogue, there is a hopeful anticipation for a resolution that prioritizes humanitarian needs and fosters inter-state cooperation.
