Health Concerns for Delhi Minister Atishi Amid Water Rights Hunger Strike

Water Minister Atishi's health has shown signs of decline on the second day of her indefinite hunger strike, aimed at securing Delhi's rightful share of water from Haryana. The Delhi government reported a significant drop in Atishi's blood sugar and blood pressure levels on Saturday, amidst her 'Pani Satyagraha' which began on Friday in Bhogal, south Delhi. This move comes in response to Haryana's reduction of Delhi's Yamuna water supply to 513 million gallons per day (MGD), impacting over 28 lakh residents amid soaring temperatures.

Atishis Health Dips Amid Hunger Strike

According to the latest health update provided by the Delhi government, Atishi's blood pressure measured at 119/79 mmHg and her blood sugar level at 83 mg/dL, with her weight recorded at 65.1 kg and oxygen saturation at 98%. These figures marked a notable decrease from Friday's readings, where her blood pressure was 132/88 mmHg, blood sugar at 99 mg/dL, weight at 65.8 kg, and oxygen level steady at 98%. Medical professionals have expressed concern over the rapid decline in Atishi's blood sugar levels, warning that continued fasting could lead to further decreases and potentially increase ketone levels in the body.

Despite the health risks, Atishi remains steadfast in her resolve. "No matter how much pain we have to bear, the hunger strike will continue until the people of Delhi get their rightful share of water," she stated. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has been vocal about Delhi's water crisis, emphasizing that while the city requires 1,005 MGD of water daily, it is entitled to receive 613 MGD from Haryana alone. However, current supplies fall short of this demand, with less than 513 MGD being supplied to the national capital.

Delhi's reliance on neighboring states such as Uttar Pradesh and Haryana for its drinking water supply underscores the gravity of the situation. The AAP's ongoing efforts to address this issue highlight the critical need for an equitable distribution of resources to meet the city's growing demands. As Atishi's hunger strike continues, it serves as a poignant reminder of the challenges faced by millions in securing basic necessities such as clean and adequate water supply.
