The voting for the Delhi University Students Union has concluded with Prof Chander Shekhar, the chief election officer announcing a voter turnout of 42%. The results for all four central posts will be announced on Saturday. Vice-Chancellor Yogesh Singh visited polling stations during the voting process.

The conclusion of the Delhi University Students Union (DUSU) elections has set a new precedent in the political landscape of India's capital city. The voting process, which took place on September 22, saw students casting their votes for four central posts - president, vice-president, secretary and joint secretary. The results are set to be announced on Saturday.

Increased Voter Turnout

According to Prof Chander Shekhar, the chief election officer for the polls, this year's voter turnout was recorded at 42 per cent. This marks a slight increase from the previous DUSU elections held in 2019 which recorded a turnout of 39.90 per cent. It is worth noting that voter turnouts in 2018 and 2017 were relatively higher at 44.46 per cent and 42.8 per cent respectively.

Elections Amidst Pandemic Challenges

The DUSU elections hold significance as they were last conducted in 2019 due to disruptions caused by COVID-19 pandemic in subsequent years (2020 and 2021). Additionally, potential interferences with the academic calendar prevented their conduct in early part of this year (2022).

Polling Process & Vice-Chancellor’s Visit

The polling procedure was divided into two parts based on class timings – daytime students concluded their voting process by 1 pm while evening class students casted their votes until as late as 7:30 pm. During this crucial democratic exercise within one of India's most prestigious universities, Vice-Chancellor Yogesh Singh made an unexpected visit to several polling stations.

Singh undertook an inspection of security arrangements at these locations and gathered information about the situation directly from election officials present there. His visits included stops at Hansraj College and Hindu College where he interacted with the students who had come to cast their votes.

The DUSU elections are a significant part of student politics in India and often serve as a platform for future political leaders. The increased voter turnout this year is indicative of the growing political awareness among students. It also highlights their willingness to participate in democratic processes, despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

In conclusion, while we await the results of these elections, it is clear that they have been successful in engaging Delhi University's large student population. These elections not only encourage active participation but also provide an opportunity for students to voice their opinions and concerns within an institutional framework. As such, they play a crucial role in shaping India's future leadership.
