Delhi University Reverses Fee Hike Following Teacher Opposition

The Delhi University has reversed its decision to increase fees for corrections in marksheets and degree certificates. This change follows objections from the Academic Council members, according to an official statement. The council, which includes teachers, opposed the fee hike approved by Vice-Chancellor Yogesh Singh last month. The fee was set to increase from Rs 500 to Rs 1,000 for corrections within six years of graduation and from Rs 1,000 to Rs 2,000 for corrections after six years.

New Proposals and Approvals

During the 1018th meeting of the Delhi University Academic Council, several new proposals were approved. These include introducing courses for LLB students on three new criminal laws effective from July 1. Additionally, a BA Honours programme in Russian Language will be available starting the 2024-2025 academic year. This is the first time Russian will be taught at the undergraduate level at DU; previously, it was only available at the postgraduate level.

The council also approved six elective papers for students at the Centre for Hindu Studies. These papers are titled Introduction to Vedic Literature, Upanishad Parichaya, Dharma and Religion, Hindu Thinkers, Bhagavad Gita for Humanity, and Purana Parichaya. Furthermore, a proposal to establish a Dr BR Ambedkar Chair at the university has been sent to the UGC for approval.

Changes in Course Curriculum

The course curriculum for the BA programme in Russian Language was passed with minor modifications recommended by the Faculty of Arts. This programme will be implemented from the academic session 2024-2025. The Department of Anthropology's recommendations to allow MSc Forensic Science students to visit crime scenes through police stations were also approved.

In addition to these changes, the council considered and passed a provision allowing students to pursue two degrees simultaneously. One degree can be completed in regular mode at university colleges or departments, while the other can be done through open and distance learning at the School of Open Learning or Campus of Open Learning.

Rejection of Manusmriti Proposal

On Thursday, Vice-Chancellor Singh rejected a proposal to teach Manusmriti to LLB students after it faced criticism from some teachers and students. Singh stated that a pre-screening committee did not find the proposal appropriate.

An action taken report on the fee hike and other items was presented before the Academic Council to inform them about proposals already passed by the Vice-Chancellor using his special powers. Due to opposition from teachers, the administration had to amend the approved proposal.

The council's approval of these various proposals signifies a significant shift in academic offerings and policies at Delhi University. These changes aim to enhance educational opportunities and address concerns raised by faculty members.

The recent decisions reflect Delhi University's commitment to adapting its academic programmes and policies based on feedback from its academic community. This approach ensures that educational standards are maintained while addressing practical needs and concerns.

The university's actions demonstrate responsiveness to its stakeholders' input while striving to offer diverse and relevant educational programmes. These developments mark a progressive step towards enriching student experiences and academic offerings at Delhi University.

The conclusion of these discussions highlights Delhi University's ongoing efforts to balance administrative decisions with academic community feedback. This balance is crucial for fostering an inclusive and dynamic educational environment.
