Delhi University to Introduce One-Year Postgraduate Programme Starting in 2026
Delhi University plans to launch a one-year postgraduate programme in 2026, aligning with the National Education Policy. The draft proposal for this initiative will be reviewed during the Academic Council meeting on December 27. Some educators have expressed concerns, suggesting that the proposal is being expedited for discussion.

DU has already rolled out a four-year undergraduate programme, which is currently in its third semester. This framework allows students to earn various qualifications based on their duration of study. A certificate is awarded after one year, a diploma after two years, and a degree after three years. Completing the fourth year results in a degree with honours.
Postgraduate Programme Structure
Students who finish three years of undergraduate study can choose a two-year postgraduate course. Those completing four years can enrol in the one-year postgraduate programme. DU is working on separate curricula for both the one-year and two-year PG programmes to accommodate these options.
The one-year postgraduate course will require students to earn 22 credits per semester, amounting to 44 credits for the entire programme. In contrast, the two-year course will involve earning 88 credits. According to UGC standards, the two-year degree will be at level 6.5, while the one-year degree will be at level 7.
Implementation and Criticism
As DU prepares to implement this new system, it faces criticism from some faculty members who feel the changes are being rushed. Despite this, DU continues to develop curricula tailored for both the one-year and two-year postgraduate courses.
This initiative reflects DU's commitment to adapting its educational offerings in line with national policies. The university aims to provide flexible learning paths that cater to diverse student needs and aspirations.
