Akhilesh Yadav Criticises BJP for Inaction on Annual Delhi Pollution Crisis
Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav recently highlighted the recurring issue of pollution in Delhi, noting its impact on Uttar Pradesh. He criticised the central government's inability to maintain a clean environment. Meanwhile, the BJP and AAP exchanged criticisms as Delhi's air quality deteriorated to a very poor level after a brief improvement.

Yadav expressed his concerns on X, stating, "The havoc of pollution in Delhi has become an annual topic. When the country's central government is unable to do anything to keep the environment clean and healthy, what of the rest of the country? This is called chiraag taley andheraa darkness below the lamp or dhundhalkaa dusk."
Delhi's Air Quality Concerns
On Sunday, calm winds hindered pollutant dispersion, worsening Delhi's air quality. Some areas experienced severe pollution levels. The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) reported that at 4 pm, Delhi's 24-hour average Air Quality Index (AQI) was 355, up from 255 on Saturday.
Data from 37 out of 40 monitoring stations revealed severe air quality at Bawana, Burari, and Jahangirpuri. Neighbouring regions like Greater Noida, Ghaziabad, and Noida also faced very poor air quality. In contrast, Faridabad and Gurugram recorded poor air quality levels.
Impact on Uttar Pradesh
Akhilesh Yadav warned that pollution effects are now reaching Uttar Pradesh. He mentioned that both water pollution in the Yamuna and air pollution are harming public health and even affecting the Taj Mahal. Yadav criticised the Uttar Pradesh BJP government for ignoring these issues.
He urged residents to protect themselves amidst these conditions. "Drive carefully in this twilight and protect yourself from respiratory diseases and also take special care of the elderly and children," he advised. Yadav emphasised self-reliance due to governmental shortcomings.
Yadav further commented on the BJP's governance failures: "The BJP government, which claims to be making the country proud across the world, is not able to save the country's image from getting blurred by the smog in the capital itself."
The presence of international diplomatic offices in Delhi adds another layer of concern. Yadav questioned what message this sends globally about India's environmental management.
The ongoing pollution crisis highlights significant governance challenges for both central and state governments. As air quality worsens, public health risks increase, necessitating urgent action.
