Delhi Police Special Cell Questions Journalists in UAPA Case
The Delhi Police Special Cell has reportedly questioned around 25 journalists and contributors of the NewsClick, an online news portal, for a second time. This questioning is in connection with a case registered under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), accusing the portal of allegedly propagating anti-national sentiments within India. The details were disclosed by sources on Monday.
Investigation Underway

An officer involved in the investigation revealed that no one has been exonerated as yet, indicating that the probe into this matter is still ongoing. Earlier on October 3rd, approximately 46 individuals had been interrogated by law enforcement bodies. This group included nine female journalists who were called in after multiple locations linked to NewsClick across Delhi and NCR were raided by the Special Cell.
Second Round of Questioning
Following these developments, everyone previously questioned was summoned for a second round of questioning. Thus far, about half of them have complied with this directive according to information provided by a police officer.
Arrests and Seizures
In addition to this series of events, Prabir Purkayastha - editor-in-chief at NewsClick - along with Amit Chakravarty - head of human relations at NewsClick - were arrested on October 3rd itself. In tandem with these arrests, more than three hundred electronic devices from both office premises and residences associated with NewsClick employees were seized.
Gadgets Sent for Forensic Examination
An official disclosed that these confiscated gadgets have since been forwarded to FSL forensic science lab for detailed examination and extraction of any content pertinent to this case.
Court Proceedings Initiated
A remand copy submitted before court authorities by the Delhi Police on October 4th indicates that legal proceedings have been initiated in this matter. However, details of these proceedings remain undisclosed at this point.
In conclusion, the case against NewsClick and its employees marks a significant development in India's media landscape. As law enforcement agencies continue their investigation into allegations of anti-national activities by an online news portal, it remains to be seen how this case will unfold and what implications it may have for journalistic freedom in India. It also raises important questions about the balance between national security concerns and the protection of free speech rights.
