FIR Filed Against Social Media User For Offensive Comment On Captain Anshuman Singh's Widow

Delhi Police have filed an FIR against a social media user for making inappropriate comments about Smriti Singh, the widow of Kirti Chakra awardee Captain Anshuman Singh. This action follows a complaint by the National Commission for Women (NCW).

The FIR was registered by the Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operation (IFSO) unit under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Information Technology (IT) Act. The BNS replaced the Indian Penal Code on July 1. The accused, a Delhi resident, faces charges under Section 79 of the BNS and Section 67 of the IT Act.

NCW's Immediate Response

The NCW took suo motu cognisance of the matter and lodged a complaint on Monday. They also wrote to the Police Commissioner of Delhi, demanding immediate arrest and a detailed report within three days. "The man's comment contravenes Section 79 of the BNS, 2023, and Section 67 of the IT Act, 2000. NCW condemns this behaviour and urges immediate action," it said on X (formerly Twitter).

Captain Anshuman Singh tragically lost his life in a fire incident last year at an Indian Army ammunition dump in Siachen Glacier. He was serving as a medical officer with 26 Punjab at that time. Despite rescuing several individuals, he succumbed to the blaze while attempting to retrieve critical medical supplies.

A Hero Remembered

For his bravery, Captain Anshuman Singh was posthumously awarded the Kirti Chakra, India's second-highest peacetime gallantry award. His widow Smriti Singh and mother Manju Singh received this honour from President Droupadi Murmu on July 5 at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

The investigation into the derogatory remarks is ongoing. Authorities are working diligently to ensure justice is served in this sensitive case.
