Revitalizing Delhis Heritage: DDA and ASI Collaborate on Parks Redevelopment
The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) and the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) have joined hands to undertake the conservation, restoration, and redevelopment of Mehrauli Archaeological Park, Sanjay Van, and Shalimar Bagh. This initiative aims to revitalize these heritage parks and enhance their cultural significance.
The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has taken on the responsibility of conserving, restoring, and redeveloping three significant parks in the city: Mehrauli Archaeological Park, Sanjay Van, and Shalimar Bagh. This initiative aims to revitalize these parks and their historical monuments, which have been neglected for some time.

Comprehensive Redevelopment Under ASI Supervision
The DDA will undertake a comprehensive redevelopment of these parks and monuments at its own expense, under the overall supervision of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). This collaboration aims to transform these sites into vibrant heritage spaces that showcase Delhi's rich history and culture.
Delhi LG's Vision for a Heritage City
Delhi Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena emphasized the importance of developing the capital as a city of heritage. He believes that these parks hold immense potential to attract tourists and provide recreational spaces for citizens.
ASI Monuments to be Transferred to DDA
The Ministry of Culture has approved the transfer of ASI monuments located within these parks to the DDA. This decision was made in response to Saxena's request, considering the DDA's successful restoration work at Mehrauli Archaeological Park, St James Church, and Qudasia Ghat - Vasudev Ghat.
Rejuvenation and Redevelopment of Additional Parks
In addition to the three main parks, the DDA will also rejuvenate and redevelop Dilli Chalo Park, Ghata Masjid Park, Urdu Academy, and Sadbhavna Park. These sites hold significant historical and cultural value and will be transformed into vibrant public spaces.
Progress Monitoring and Timely Completion
A high-level committee, chaired by the Union Culture Secretary, will be formed to monitor the progress and ensure the timely completion of works at all three sites. This committee will oversee the implementation of the redevelopment plans and address any challenges that may arise.
Historical Significance of Sanjay Van and Shalimar Bagh
Sanjay Van is home to several medieval monuments, including Qila Rai Pithora, which dates back to the Tomar dynasty. It also houses notable monuments like Rajon Ki Baoli and Anangtal Baoli. Shalimar Bagh, located in North Delhi, features the Sheesh Mahal, an extensive Mughal Garden, and various relics from the Mughal era. Emperor Aurangzeb was coronated at Shalimar Bagh, adding to its historical significance.
The DDA's initiative to conserve, restore, and redevelop these historical parks and monuments is a significant step towards preserving Delhi's rich heritage. By transforming these sites into vibrant public spaces, the DDA aims to create a sense of pride among citizens and attract visitors from around the world. These parks will serve as a testament to Delhi's glorious past and contribute to the city's overall cultural landscape.
