Delhi-NCR Eases Air Quality Restrictions Amid Pollution Drop
The air quality panel of the Centre has eased Stage 3 restrictions in Delhi-NCR due to a drop in pollution levels. However, measures from Stages 1 and 2 remain active to prevent any worsening of the situation. The decision was announced on Sunday after observing improvements in air quality across the capital and surrounding areas.
Delhi's air quality has improved, with the 24-hour average AQI recorded at 339 at 4 pm and 335 at 5 pm on Sunday. The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) noted that trends suggest further reductions in AQI levels. Despite this improvement, Stage 1 and Stage 2 restrictions will continue to be enforced.

Pollution Control Measures
The CAQM highlighted forecasts from the India Meteorological Department and IIT Madras, which predict that Delhi's AQI will stay within the 'poor' category, ranging between 200 and 300, over the next few days. This forecast underscores the need for continued vigilance despite the easing of some restrictions.
With Stage 3 curbs lifted, BS-III petrol and BS-IV diesel vehicles are now allowed to operate in Delhi and NCR regions. Previously under GRAP-3 rules, stringent measures were enforced to tackle pollution. These included bans on non-essential construction activities, industries using non-clean fuels, and non-essential diesel generators.
Continued Vigilance Required
Diesel trucks carrying non-essential goods were also barred from entering Delhi, and open burning of waste was strictly prohibited. Schools were required to switch classes up to Grade 5 to a hybrid learning mode as part of Stage 3 provisions. These measures aimed to reduce pollution significantly during high-risk periods.
"Actions under Stage-I & II of the revised GRAP shall, however, remain invoked and be implemented, monitored and reviewed by all the agencies concerned in the entire NCR to ensure that the AQI levels do not slip further. All implementing agencies shall keep strict vigil and especially intensify measures under Stage-I & II of the revised GRAP," stated the commission.
The rollback of Stage 3 restrictions marks a positive development for residents but highlights ongoing challenges in managing air quality effectively.
