Delhi-NCR Earthquake Alert: Safety Tips For High-Rise Dwellers Amid Tremors

A mild but strong earthquake of magnitude 4.0 struck Delhi and nearby areas early on Monday morning, followed by similar tremors in Bihar. According to the National Centre for Seismology, the earthquake in Delhi occurred at a depth of 5 kilometres at 5:36 am, while the tremor in Bihar struck at a depth of 10 kilometres and was felt mostly in Siwan at 8:02 am.

Residents in Delhi, Gurugram, Noida, and Ghaziabad reported hearing a "growling" sound as the ground shook. The tremors caused people to rush outside in fear, but there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

Delhi-NCR Earthquake Alert

Prime Minister Narendra Modi advised people in the affected regions to remain calm and follow safety precautions. "Tremors were felt in Delhi and nearby areas. Urging everyone to stay calm and follow safety precautions, staying alert for possible aftershocks. Authorities are keeping a close watch on the situation," PM Modi said on X, formerly known as Twitter.

The epicentre of the earthquake in Delhi was in the Jheel Park area of Dhaula Kuan. Some residents also reported hearing a loud noise when the tremors occurred.

Experts explain that shallow earthquakes, which occur closer to the surface, often cause more damage than deeper ones.

Safety Precautions During An Earthquake

  • Take cover under sturdy furniture like a table and protect your head with your hands if the tremors are strong. If the shaking is mild, sit on the floor.
  • If you live in a high-rise building, stay indoors until the shaking stops. After it ceases, evacuate safely.
  • When leaving a building, move to an open area away from structures to avoid falling debris.
  • Always use the stairs to exit a building. Do not use lifts, as power failures could trap you inside.
  • Stay away from buildings, electric poles, trees, wires, flyovers, and heavy vehicles.
  • If you are driving, stop the car in an open area and remain inside until the tremors stop to avoid injury.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation and advise residents to stay alert for any further tremors.
