Delhi Mayors Move to Regularize Booked Properties Benefits Lakhs
Mayor Shelly Oberois proposal to regularize booked properties in Delhi provides a solution for lakhs of people to get their properties regularized by removing illegal constructions and obtaining building sanction plans.
In a significant move, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) House, led by Mayor Shelly Oberoi, has approved a proposal to regularize booked properties in the city. This decision, coming months ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, is expected to benefit lakhs of people and curb corruption in the process of installing electricity meters at such properties.

Addressing Pressing Property Issues
Mayor Oberoi, while addressing a press conference, highlighted the common problem faced by property owners in Delhi. She explained that whenever there is a renovation, alteration, or construction of a new building, the MCD often books such properties for action. This has resulted in uncertainty and inconvenience for many property owners.
Drawing Inspiration from Court Case
The proposal for regularizing booked properties draws inspiration from a court case known as Preeti vs MCD (2007). Based on this case, the MCD has devised a process to allow property owners to regularize their booked properties by obtaining building sanction plans and removing illegal constructions.
Streamlined Process for Regularization
Oberoi outlined the process for regularizing booked properties. Property owners can initiate the process by filing a property tax return. The assessing officer of the MCD's Assessment and Collection department will then request the building plan from the Building department. The assessing officer must respond to the Building department with the house tax details related to the property within 15 days.
The zonal deputy commissioner and superintendent engineer will ensure that any changes in a building are communicated to the Electricity department and the Delhi Jal Board. Action on any illegal construction will be taken only after preparing a report of the property and informing all relevant departments.
Additional Proposals Approved
In addition to the proposal on booked properties, the MCD House also approved several other proposals. These include allocating space on rent to an NGO for working women, purchasing uniforms and stationery for schoolchildren, and appointing additional commissioner-deputy commissioner.
The MCD's decision to regularize booked properties is a welcome move that will provide relief to lakhs of property owners in Delhi. By streamlining the process and ensuring transparency, the MCD aims to curb corruption and facilitate the lawful regularization of properties. This decision is expected to have a positive impact on the real estate sector and bring much-needed clarity and convenience to property owners in the city.
