Delhi Man’s Sinful Pilgrimage: Robs to Attend Maha Kumbh, Lands in Police Custody

In a recent incident in Delhi, a man was apprehended for burglarizing three residences, driven by an unusual motive. Identified as Arvind, also known as Bhola, he carried out these thefts with the intent of funding a trip to the grand religious event, the Maha Kumbh Mela, currently being held in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. The thefts were executed on January 17 in the Rajpuri locality of Delhi's Dabri area, where Arvind stole valuable items and jewelry.

Arvind's decision to resort to theft was influenced by his dire financial situation. Growing up in a family where his father is a laborer and his mother works as a housemaid, the idea of affording a trip to the Maha Kumbh was far-fetched. Arvind, along with his friends, aspired to participate in the 45-day religious festival that began on January 13 and is set to conclude on February 26. He revealed to the Delhi Police's burglary cell that his family's economic hardships made it challenging for them to plan such an excursion.

The Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 has attracted a staggering number of pilgrims from across India and around the world. The event, known for its spiritual significance, is estimated to draw around 450 million (45 crore) devotees, including 1.5 million (15 lakh) foreigners, who will bathe in the Sangam—the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati rivers—by the time it concludes on February 26.

Arvind's criminal record is not limited to this instance. He has been involved in numerous illegal activities, with a history of 16 theft and burglary cases already registered against him. His first arrest was made in 2020, and it has been suggested that apart from his financial woes, Arvind's inclination towards theft was also fueled by his drug addiction. This backdrop paints a complex picture of a man driven to crime not only by economic desperation but also by substance abuse.

Despite the spiritual allure of the Maha Kumbh Mela, it's unfortunate that it also became a motivator for criminal activities. The event, which sees millions converging at the Sangam for a holy dip, symbolizes a quest for spiritual cleansing and enlightenment. For Arvind and his associates, the journey to Prayagraj was seen as an escape and a means to fulfill a longing for spiritual participation, albeit funded through illicit means.
