Sweeping Changes: Delhi LG Greenlights CUET Score as Admission Criteria for Vacant Law Program Seats

In a recent move, Delhi's Lieutenant Governor has approved the use of Common University Entrance Test (CUET) scores to fill remaining vacancies in Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University's (GGSIPU) law programs. This decision comes after exhausting the complete merit list from CLAT UG.

The Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, VK Saxena, has given his approval for the admission of students based on their aggregate score in the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) against vacant seats left after the complete merit list of CLAT UG was exhausted for the 2023-24 academic session. This decision applies to five-year integrated law programmes offered by Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIPU), according to officials from Raj Niwas.

Delayed Approval Causes Concern

CUET based admissions

In a document addressed to Delhi's Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, LG Saxena expressed his concern that his approval had been sought well after the commencement of the 2023-24 academic session. According to him, this delay caused unnecessary inconvenience and stress to aspiring students who are keen on enrolling in these highly coveted professional programmes.

Government Initiative Fills Vacancies

Sources within the Delhi government have commented that LG's remarks concerning admissions into vacant seats were unfortunate. They highlighted that it was due to initiatives taken by them that no vacancies remained unfilled in private colleges under GGSIPU. Priorly, many seats were left unoccupied as only scores from Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) were being considered for admissions.

Admissions Via CUET Scores: A Novel Approach

This is why it was decided that any remaining vacancies would be filled using CUET scores. As per sources, this approach is novel and has not been implemented by any university before. The rationale behind this move is simple - if there are students with good CUET scores but could not make it through CLAT cut-off lists, they should still have an opportunity at gaining quality education instead of leaving those seats vacant.

Delhi Government Allows New Admission Criteria

The Delhi government has allowed CUET score to be considered as the admission criteria, ensuring all vacancies are filled. This decision is expected to provide a fair chance to all students and ensure that no seat goes unoccupied in these prestigious programmes.

In conclusion, the approval of LG Saxena for admissions based on CUET scores against vacant seats after CLAT merit list exhaustion is an innovative move by GGSIPU. While there was some delay in gaining this approval and it caused concerns among aspirants, it ultimately provides an opportunity for more students to pursue their career goals. The Delhi government's initiative ensures that every seat in professional programmes at GGSIPU gets filled, thereby providing quality education opportunities to a larger pool of candidates.
