Delhi Hospital Workers Protest Turns Heads with Tonsured Protest

Sanitation workers of the Delhi government-run Burari hospital staged a protest march on Wednesday, demanding the resolution of their grievances, including alleged sexual harassment, illegal retrenchment, and caste discrimination.

Shav Yatra and Head Tonsuring

The workers organized a symbolic funeral procession, called a Shav Yatra, of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and tonsured their heads to express their abandonment by the Delhi government. This action followed an alleged crackdown by the Delhi Police on their nine-day-long sit-in protest at the hospital.

Grievances and Demands

The sanitation workers have been protesting against various issues, including alleged sexual harassment, corruption, illegal retrenchments, caste discrimination, and other violations of labor rights by the hospital administration and a private contractor company overseeing the sanitation work.

Meeting with Health Minister

Following the protest, Health Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj met with a delegation of the sanitation workers. During the meeting, the minister assured that no worker would be retrenched and that a committee would be formed to investigate the corruption allegations and alleged labor law violations by the contract company and the role of the hospital administration in these matters.

The protest by the sanitation workers highlights the need for addressing their grievances and ensuring their rights and well-being are protected. The formation of a committee to investigate the allegations and the assurance of no retrenchments are positive steps towards resolving the situation.
