The Delhi government is anticipated to soon finalize the last payment of its share in the upcoming Delhi-Meerut Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) corridor. Delhi-Meerut RRTS Corridor

A senior government official divulged that last week the transport department forwarded a file to the finance department for approval of this payment. This sum represents the concluding portion of the Delhi government's overall contribution of Rs 1,180 crore towards the RAPIDX corridor project. The impending completion of these financial obligations marks significant progress for this ambitious infrastructure venture.

About The Project

The Delhi-Meerut RRTS corridor is an extensive transit system spanning over 82.15 km and connects Sarai Kale Khan in New Delhi city to Modipuram in Meerut. With an estimated cost pegged at Rs 31,632 crore, this project aims at enhancing transportation efficiency between these two urban centres. Comprising of 24 stations along its route, it promises to cover this considerable distance within just one hour once operational.

Funding Details

In March 2019, as part of their commitment towards this project, the Delhi government had disbursed Rs 265 crore as their first instalment contribution towards funding it. As per officials' statements, similar to past payments made earlier in May this year from environmental cess corpus funds; even this forthcoming final instalment inclusive of taxes will be paid from those resources.

Future Prospects

Besides this existing plan under implementation connecting New Delhi and Meerut via rapid transit system; there are also proposals for two more such corridors on cards. These are envisioned to connect Delhi with Alwar and Panipat in Haryana respectively, thereby further expanding this network of high-speed regional rail service. This semi-high-speed regional rail service has been named as RRTS.

In conclusion, the impending final payment by the Delhi government for the Delhi-Meerut RRTS corridor marks a significant milestone towards its completion. Once operational, it promises to drastically reduce travel time between these two cities and enhance transportation efficiency. Furthermore, with proposals for additional corridors connecting other urban centres also under consideration; this initiative represents a key step towards revolutionizing intercity transport dynamics within this region.
