A fire broke out in a women's paying guest facility in Northwest Delhi's Mukherjee Nagar area on Wednesday evening, leading to the rescue of thirty-five people, including a four-year-old girl. The swift response by firemen ensured that all inmates were safely evacuated from the premises, averting potential casualties.
Rescue Operation and Casualties

The officials from the fire department reported that five individuals had to be rushed to hospital due to inhalation of fumes. Among these was the young girl who was also staying at the facility. Despite sending 20 fire tenders to tackle the blaze, only eight could reach the location owing to traffic congestion and narrow lanes characteristic of this part of Delhi.
"All inmates of the PG were safely rescued and there was no casualty," confirmed an officer from Delhi Police. This sentiment was echoed by Deputy Commissioner of Police (northwest), Jitender Kumar Meena who added, "Around 7.45 PM, we received a call regarding a fire breaking out in a PG. Shortly after, local police and the fire brigade arrived at the scene."
Investigations into Cause
Post evacuation and containment efforts, preliminary investigations have revealed that a short-circuit may have been responsible for sparking off this incident. "The cause of the fire was identified as a short-circuit in meter sic", said DCP Meena.
Government Response
In light of this incident which has raised concerns over safety standards maintained at such facilities across Delhi, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal assured citizens that he is monitoring developments closely.
The Role Of Fire Department
The role played by firefighters in managing this crisis cannot be overstated; their prompt action resulted not just in extinguishing flames but also ensuring that all residents were brought to safety. The fire department was alerted about the incident through an emergency call and they responded with immediate effect.
In conclusion, this incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers posed by electrical faults and the importance of maintaining high safety standards in residential facilities. The quick response from the fire department and local police is commendable, which ensured minimal damage and no loss of life. However, it also highlights the need for better infrastructure planning in congested areas like Mukherjee Nagar to allow for smooth functioning of rescue operations during emergencies.
