Delhi Doctor Slapped, Abused Inside Hospital Days After Nationwide Strike
A resident doctor and a medical dresser were attacked by a patient's attendant at Doctor Hedgewar Hospital in Karkardooma, New Delhi. This incident occurred late on Saturday night while the doctor was providing critical care to a patient.
The assault happened just days after resident doctors resumed work following an 11-day nationwide strike. The strike, which began on August 12, was in protest over the alleged rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata. It had severely disrupted non-emergency services across major central and Delhi government hospitals.

Incident Details
The assaulted doctor recounted the event, stating, "Late Saturday night, around 1:00 am, a patient with a forehead injury was brought to the hospital. I took him to the dressing room to stitch the wound. After I finished the first stitch and was working on the second, the patient suddenly pushed me and began hurling abuses." The doctor added that the patient's son entered the room, slapped him, and both started abusing him further.
The patient involved in the incident was reportedly intoxicated. The attack has raised concerns about the safety of medical professionals who are already under immense pressure due to their demanding jobs.
Strike Impact
Hundreds of resident doctors in Delhi had resumed work on August 23 after an appeal by the Supreme Court and assurances from the government to address their concerns. The strike had significantly affected non-emergency services, including outpatient departments (OPD) and diagnostics.
The disruption caused by the strike highlighted the critical role resident doctors play in maintaining healthcare services. Their absence led to delays and cancellations of numerous medical procedures, affecting countless patients.
Despite resuming work, incidents like this recent attack underline ongoing issues within the healthcare system that need urgent attention. Ensuring a safe working environment for medical staff is paramount for uninterrupted healthcare delivery.
The recent events have sparked discussions about implementing stricter security measures in hospitals to protect healthcare workers from such assaults. Enhanced security protocols could help prevent similar incidents in the future.
As resident doctors continue their duties amidst these challenges, it is crucial for authorities to take immediate steps to safeguard their well-being. Addressing these safety concerns will not only protect medical professionals but also ensure better care for patients.
Ensuring that hospitals are safe spaces for both staff and patients should be a priority for healthcare administrators and policymakers alike. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by those on the front lines of medical care.
