Delhi Crime: Police reported that at least 12 officers sustained injuries while attempting to quell a mob allegedly assaulting a suspected extortionist in the Khayala area of west Delhi on Wednesday. The suspect, identified as Balram, who has a record of over 12 criminal cases, was accused of coercing vendors at the Raghubir Nagar market in Khayala for "protection money."

According to another police official, early on Wednesday, Balram was confronted and beaten by individuals after he attempted to collect "protection money" from vendors.

Upon receiving information about the assault, local police promptly dispatched a team to the scene. However, when officers tried to rescue Balram, they were met with a barrage of stones from the mob, the official reported.

The mob proceeded to set fire to Balram's parked car in the market area and attempted to assault Pramod, his associate. Balram was successfully rescued, although he sustained injuries and is currently receiving treatment at Safdarjung Hospital, where his condition is reported as stable. Twelve police personnel sustained minor injuries and were discharged from the hospital after receiving first aid.

The officer noted that investigative teams have been assembled to probe both incidents further.
