Delhi CM Rekha Gupta Initiates City-Wide Cleanliness Drive and Stray Animal Management Measures
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has initiated a comprehensive cleanliness campaign across the city. This initiative aims to remove illegal advertisements and manage stray animals effectively. On Wednesday, Gupta convened a meeting at the Delhi Secretariat to assess the city's cleanliness, civic infrastructure, and public amenities. The discussion highlighted issues such as stray animals, potholes, dust pollution, sewer blockages, and illegal advertisements on public properties.

Senior officials from various departments, including the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), Public Works Department (PWD), Delhi Jal Board (DJB), and Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB), attended the meeting. During this session, Gupta instructed MCD officials to conduct regular field inspections. She stressed that all officers must visit different wards daily and submit weekly reports to the chief secretary for her review.
Focus on Cleanliness and Infrastructure
The chief minister announced a large-scale cleanliness drive scheduled for March 28-29, aimed at preparing for the new year. This initiative will target every street, neighbourhood, and public space, with particular attention to religious sites. Lawmakers and civic officials are expected to participate actively in ensuring the campaign's success.
Gupta also addressed illegal commercial advertisements on public properties. She directed authorities to remove these ads from roads, flyovers, school boundary walls, and street signs. Strict action will be taken against violators under the Public Property Defacement Act.
Regarding stray animals, Gupta announced a special drive to clear roads of wandering cattle and dogs. She ordered the construction of proper shelters for stray cows and called for a structured plan to relocate stray dogs. Each municipal ward will identify the number of stray animals and develop an action plan for their rehabilitation.
Monsoon Preparedness and Waste Management
Gupta emphasised monsoon preparedness by instructing authorities to fill potholes before the rainy season begins. She called for an assessment of areas prone to waterlogging and directed officials to implement preventive measures. Additionally, she ordered repairs and ensured proper functioning of streetlights to illuminate dark spots in the city.
To enhance waste management, Gupta directed municipal bodies to prevent garbage collection points from overflowing. She mandated timely waste removal from roadsides and public spaces and instructed officials to prepare a time-bound plan for cleaning drains and clearing sewer blockages.
The chief minister reiterated her administration's zero-tolerance policy towards corruption in civic projects. She stressed that public funds should be used effectively, with visible improvements on the ground being a priority. Gupta warned that negligence in duties would not be tolerated and demanded a list of non-compliant officials be submitted directly to her.
Traffic Management and Green Spaces
Gupta also highlighted the need for better traffic management and green space maintenance. She instructed road-owning agencies to maintain greenery along streets and central road dividers. Additionally, she called for strict regulation of roadside parking to ensure smooth traffic flow and reduce congestion.
The chief minister's directives aim to improve Delhi's overall infrastructure and living conditions significantly. By addressing these issues comprehensively, Gupta seeks to create a cleaner, safer environment for all residents.
