Delhi CM Kejriwal Approaches SC Seeking Extension Of His Interim Bail

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal whose bail tenure ends on June 1 on the last day of polling has approached the Supreme Court, seeking an extension of his interim bail by 7 days.

Citing medical tests, the Delhi CM has filed a plea requesting the apex court to extend his interim bail.

The medical team at Max Hospital has conducted initial examinations. The Chief Minister's legal counsel said these tests for his well-being and urged the court to grant an extension to complete the required medical investigations.

On May 5, The Supreme Court had granted interim bail to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in connection with a money laundering case linked to the now-scrapped Delhi liquor policy.

Following a brief hearing on an interim bail plea submitted by Kejriwal, a bench comprising Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Dipankar Datta delivered the verdict. Kejriwal's plea contested his arrest in the Delhi liquor policy case and sought interim bail to allow him to engage in campaigning for the ongoing Lok Sabha elections.

The case relates to alleged corruption and money laundering in the formulation and execution of the Delhi government's now-scrapped excise policy for 2021-22.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader was arrested on March 21. AAP leaders Manish Sisodia and Sanjay Singh are also under judicial custody in connection with the case.

On the other hand, Kejriwal, in a recent interview, stated that his release from jail on June 5 would be possible if the INDIA bloc comes to power.

"Judiciary is under tremendous pressure currently. Everyone knows how much pressure they are working under now," Kejriwal said in an interview to PTI.

Describing the cases against him as "bogus", Kejriwal said that there is no evidence of financial impropriety and no money trail has been identified. Since being granted interim bail, Kejriwal has reiterated in his rallies that he will be freed after the Lok Sabha elections are announced on June 4.
