Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal Sent to ED Custody in Excise Policy Case

New Delhi, Mar 22 - The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has expressed its approval following a Delhi court's decision to place Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal under the Enforcement Directorate's (ED) custody. This move is linked to allegations surrounding an excise policy money-laundering case. Union Minister and BJP leader Smriti Irani, during a press conference, highlighted that this development underscores the principle that no individual stands above the law. The arrest of Kejriwal, who had initially promised a regime of change and transparency, marks a significant turn of events as he faces charges of misusing state mechanisms for personal gain.

Kejriwal in ED Custody for Case

Kejriwal, aged 55, was detained by the ED under anti-money laundering legislation at his official residence in Delhi's Civil Lines area on Thursday. Special Judge Kaveri Baweja, presiding over the Rouse Avenue court, has ordered Kejriwal's custody with the ED until March 28, responding to the agency's request for a 10-day remand. The case proceedings have revealed allegations of liquor companies playing a pivotal role in the formulation and execution of Delhi's excise policy, pointing towards a complex web of financial transactions.

Irani also addressed inquiries regarding Rahul Gandhi's support for Kejriwal's family amidst these developments. She pointed out the apparent contradictions within the Congress party's stance on the matter, referencing past instances where Rahul Gandhi criticized the Delhi liquor scam and other Congress leaders accused Kejriwal of financial misconduct. Furthermore, Irani criticized members of the INDIA bloc parties for their actions following Kejriwal's arrest, suggesting that their solidarity might be rooted in shared interests in corruption.

The case against Kejriwal has ignited discussions on political accountability and the integrity of public officials. With legal proceedings underway, this incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges in combating corruption within India's political landscape. As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how this case will impact the broader discourse on governance and ethical conduct in public office.
