Farmers' Protest continues
Until February 29, the 'Dilli Chalo' march has been halted by the farmers, who are currently hosting various events at the Shambhu and Khanauri borders. On Saturday, a candlelight march was conducted at the protest site to mourn the death of a farmer who lost his life during the agitation a few days earlier.
Simultaneously, the process to partially reopen the Singhu and Tikri borders between Delhi and Haryana, which had been sealed since the protests began on February 13, has been initiated by the authorities. Additionally, internet service has been reinstated in seven districts in Haryana -- Kaithal, Kurukshetra, Ambala, Sirsa, Fatehabad, Jind, and Hisar.
Farmers Protest: Here are the latest developments
- On Sunday, it was stated by farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher that the protest will persist until the central government addresses their demands, and a decision regarding the continuation of the Dilli Chalo march will be made on December 29. Until then, multiple events are planned at the Punjab-Haryana border.
- PM Modi is being urged to address the issues concerning the farmers, as mentioned by the farmer leader.
- A candle march was carried out by the protesters on Saturday night at Shambhu and Khanauri on Punjab's border with Haryana to honor the farmer who lost his life during the ongoing agitation. Shubhkaran, 21, was killed in the clash in Khanauri on February 21. His cremation has not taken place yet, with farmer leaders insisting on the Punjab government ordering the registration of an FIR against those responsible for his death.
- Meanwhile, Union Agriculture Minister Arjun Munda reiterated the government's openness to discussions and urged talks to find a solution, as farmers hinted at the possibility of the protest continuing even after the model code of conduct for the Lok Sabha polls comes into force.
- Seminars will be organized at the protest site today to address issues related to farmers. Effigies of the World Trade Organization and the Centre will be burnt on Monday. On February 27, meetings of the forums associated with the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KMM) will be held across the country, and on February 28, a common meeting of SKM and KMM forums will take place. Farmer leaders will meet to decide the next step in the Dilli Chalo march on February 29.
- Thousands of farmers are currently stationed at Khanauri and Shambhu after their march to Delhi was halted by the police to press the Centre for various demands, including a legal guarantee of minimum support price (MSP) for crops, implementation of the Swaminathan Commission's recommendations, pension for farmers and farm labourers, no hike in electricity tariff, withdrawal of police cases, "justice" for the victims of the 2021 Lakhimpur Kheri violence, reinstatement of the Land Acquisition Act, 2013, and compensation to the families of the farmers who died during a previous agitation in 2020-21, among other demands.
