Dehradun, Nov 12: A day after it was reported that the missing Delhi-based Bengali couple were murdered in Uttarakhand, another shocking revelation came to light on Wednesday that the woman was allegedly raped before being thrown off the cliff.

27-year-old Moumita Das was allegedly raped and murdered and her 24-year-old companion Avijit Paul was killed by the taxi driver Raju and his three accomplices- Bablu, Guddu and Kundan, police said.

One of the accused 27-year-old Bablu on Tuesday confessed during interrogation that he raped Moumita before killing her, police sources claimed, adding that this can be confirmed only after her body was found.

The sources said that the accused confessed that the woman's body was dumped in the Yamuna river near Lakhamandal while Avijit's body was thrown from a cliff about two km from there.

Search has been launched to find Moumita's body from the Yamuna.

A TOI report said that SP of Uttarkashi was quoted as saying,"Initially, Babloo said that all four took turns to rape Moumita. He later confessed that he alone had raped her."

Search has been launched to find Moumita's body from the Yamuna. She used to teach at a school in Gurgaon, whereas Avijit was a painter.

Moumita hailed from Kalyani in Nadia district in West Bengal while Avijit hailed from Dumdum near Kolkata.

The tragic incident happened on October 23 when the couple was returning in the taxi from the Tiger Falls about 30 km from Chakrata.

As there was no news about them for several days, Moumita's father lodged a complaint in Delhi on October 29, they said.

The matter came to light after Avijit's body was recovered from Purola town in Uttarkashi district.

Moumita and Avijit had arrived in Dehradun on October 21 to celebrate Diwali, but were reportedly missing after two days, Vikasnagar Circle Officer Swapan Kishore Singh had said.
