Deer musk worth Rs 16 crore seized, 1 arrested

A man was arrested by Wildlife Crime Control Wing on Thursday night while he was trying to sell deer musk worth Rs 16 crore
in Kochi, Kerala.

The police has not divulged the identity of the culprit. It is not clear whether he was part of a racket and how did he get hold of the deer musk.

Musk is obtained from a gland of the male musk deer situated in its back/rectal area. The substance has been extensively used as a perfume fixative, incense material, and medicine, since ancient times. It was and still is one of the most expensive animal products in the world.

Last year online trading of deer musk had been busted by a secret operation of forest officials of Tiruppattur division in Vellore district, Tamil Nadu.
