Decisions by Ajit Pawar Faction of NCP Within Legal Framework: Sunil Tatkare

The political landscape of Maharashtra has been rife with tension following the split of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) on July 2. The faction led by Ajit Pawar, along with eight MLAs, joined hands with the Eknath Shinde government. This move has resulted in a dispute over the party name and symbol between factions led by Ajit Pawar and Sharad Pawar, a scenario currently under review by the Election Commission of India (ECI).

Ajit Pawar faction, NCP, legal framework

Lok Sabha MP Sunil Tatkare voiced his support for Ajit Pawar's faction on October 9, stating that their decisions were made within legal boundaries and have been presented to the ECI supported by relevant documentation. "Our legal representatives have made a detailed presentation supported by documents to the ECI stating the decision taken by us is within the framework of law. The decision we have taken under the leadership of Ajit Pawar is right and appropriate," said Tatkare during a press conference.

Appointment as Maharashtra Unit Chief

Sunil Tatkare, who represents Raigad in Lok Sabha, was appointed as Maharashtra unit chief of NCP's Ajit Pawar faction. His backing adds weightage to this group's claims before the Election Commission.

Meeting at Election Commission

The Election Commission met both warring factions on October 6 to hear their claims over party name and poll symbol rights. Sharad Pawar, founder member of NCP, was present at this personal hearing convened by ECI.

Ajit Pawar had earlier approached ECI staking claim over party name and symbol rights for his faction. This move has added fuel to an already heated situation within one of Maharashtra’s prominent political parties.

Legal Framework & Decisions

The NCP split has raised questions over the legal framework within which political parties operate in India. The decisions taken by Ajit Pawar faction, according to Tatkare, are well within this legal framework and have been presented before the ECI with supporting documents.

In conclusion, the outcome of this dispute will be a landmark decision in Indian politics as it pertains not only to party name and symbol but also raises issues about democratic functioning within political parties. This situation is being closely monitored by other political parties nationwide, as its resolution could set a precedent for future intra-party disputes. Regardless of the final verdict from ECI, it is clear that this incident has stirred up significant discourse over party leadership and democracy within Indian politics.
