Dayanidhi Maran to be questioned by CBI on November 30 in illegal telephone exchange scam
New Delhi, Nov 27: The Supreme Court today said that Dayanidhi Maran should appear before the CBI for questioning, but also added that there shall be no custodial interrogation. The court said that the CBI could question the former telecom minister between 11 AM and 5 PM on November 30.
The Supreme Court was hearing a matter in which the CBI had sought the custodial interrogation of the former telecom minister in connection with the illegal telephone exchange scam.

The Supreme Court today directed that Maran be present when the CBI wants to question him. However the court made it clear that there shall not be any custodial interrogation of Maran.
This would mean that the CBI cannot arrest Maran and question him in custody. Maran would have to appear before the CBI on November 30 and will be questioned from 11 AM to 5 PM, the Supreme Court also observed in its order.
The CBI had indicated in June that they sought to arrest Maran who was not cooperating with the probe. He had obtained anticipatory bail following which the Supreme Court was moved. The CBI filed an affidavit seeking his custody, but the same was turned down by the Supreme Court.
The case pertains to the illegal telephone exchange scam. It was alleged that Maran had 764 high speed telephone lines which helped the Sun TV network owned by his brother. It was alleged that he had made use of his position as the telecom minister to seek this benefit.
Maran has been asked to appear before the CBI on November 30 and the questioning will take place for 6 days, the Supreme Court also observed.
