Dawood Ibrahim shopped as agencies looked for him
While many agencies were looking out for fugitive don, Dawood Ibrahim, the man was shopping. As part of his security upgrade programme, he wanted to pick up a couple of state-of-the-art bullet proof vehicles.
Dawood got in touch with his contact in the United Arab Emirates and directed him to purchase five bullet proof vehicles and ship them to Pakistan. The man in the UAE was Tariq and he did the needful at the behest of the don.
Dawood: Yet another case filed, but does India really want to catch him?
The input regarding this deal came to the notice of the Intelligence Bureau in October 2014. The intercepts suggested that the don was looking to purchase state-of-the-art bullet proof vehicles in a bid to up his security.
His security advisors had told him that there was a chance of a hit on him and this prompted him to get custom made bullet proof vehicles from the UAE.
According to the information available with the agencies, Tariq had done the ground work in the UAE and reported to the don about purchasing Toyota Land Cruisers. He also customised it to the don's liking and during the early half managed it to ship it to Karachi.
This is however, not for the first time that the intelligence agencies have picked up an intercept on the Dubai based Tariq. An earlier intercept of 2009 also suggested that Tariq was tasked with picking up vehicles for the don and shipping it to Karachi.
