Karnataka CM Demands Better Conviction Rates in Dalit Atrocity Cases
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah expressed dissatisfaction with the poor conviction rate in cases involving atrocities against Dalits. He called for improved investigations, increased punishment for violence against women and children, and criticized the trend of frequent police transfers.
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah voiced his dissatisfaction over the low conviction rate in cases involving atrocities committed against Dalits during the annual conference of senior police officers held at the office of the Director General of Police on Tuesday, January 16.
Improving Investigation Quality
Emphasizing the need to restore victims' faith in the system, the Chief Minister stressed the importance of enhancing the quality of investigations into cases of atrocities. He issued a clear directive to submit scientifically valid charge sheets, as stated in a statement released by the Chief Minister's Office.
Addressing Violence Against Women and Children
Siddaramaiah also addressed the issue of violence against women and children, demanding an end to such cases. He warned the Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCPs) that if they failed to address this issue effectively, they would be held accountable.
Free Hand to the Police
The Chief Minister reiterated the government's commitment to providing the police with a free hand in carrying out their duties. However, he cautioned against misusing this freedom and reminded the officers that their primary responsibility is to serve the people.
Criticism of Transfer Trends
Siddaramaiah criticized the prevailing trend of frequent transfers among police officers. He expressed his disapproval of officers seeking transfers based on their caste affiliations and urged them to refrain from such practices.
Upholding Secular Values
Highlighting India's secular nature, the Chief Minister emphasized the role of the police department in upholding the aspirations enshrined in the constitution.
Leveraging Technology
Siddaramaiah also advocated for the maximum utilization of modern technology in policing, asserting that it can significantly contribute to reducing crime cases.
