Over 100 Injured During Dahi Handi Celebrations in Mumbai and Thane
During Janmashtami celebrations, over 107 participants or 'Govindas' suffered injuries while forming human pyramids as part of the traditional Dahi Handi ritual in Mumbai and Thane. Despite the injuries, festivities continued with enthusiasm under the watchful eyes of politicians and celebrities.
The festival of Janmashtami, marking the birth of Lord Krishna, is celebrated with great enthusiasm and traditional fervor across India. In Maharashtra, a unique tradition associated with this festival is the formation of human pyramids by groups known as 'Govindas' to break clay pots (dahi handis) suspended in mid-air. However, this year's Dahi Handi celebrations in Mumbai and Thane city on September 7 were marred by incidents of injuries.
Incidents During Dahi Handi Celebrations

According to official reports, at least 107 Govindas participating in the pyramid formations were injured in Mumbai on Thursday. Additionally, 17 participants suffered wounds during similar celebrations held in adjoining Thane city. These injuries are often a result of falls that occur during the formation of multi-tiered human pyramids.
Celebrations Amid Rains
Despite intermittent rains throughout the day, enthusiastic participation was witnessed from revellers across Mumbai and its adjoining areas. The festivities commenced early morning and continued until late evening. Prominent politicians including Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde along with several Bollywood celebrities graced various Dahi Handi events across Mumbai and Thane city.
Dahi Handi Competitions
Apart from being a cultural celebration, Dahi Handi has evolved into a competitive event over time. Various competitions were organized at numerous locations across Mumbai offering cash prizes for Govinda groups that succeeded in breaking dahi handis.
Risk Factor Involved
The practice involves forming tall human towers or pyramids to reach high hanging pots filled with curd - an act symbolizing young Lord Krishna’s love for butter. While it adds an element of excitement to the festivities, it also presents significant risk. The formation of human pyramids, particularly those of considerable height, poses a high chance of participants falling and getting injured – in some cases critically.
In conclusion, while the Dahi Handi celebrations associated with Janmashtami bring together communities in a unique demonstration of skill and teamwork, they are not without risks. The number of injuries reported this year serves as a reminder that safety measures need to be stringently implemented and adhered to during such events. It is important for organizers and participants alike to ensure that the spirit of celebration does not overshadow the importance of safety precautions thus ensuring an injury-free festive experience.
