Cyclone Vardah moves towards Karnataka
The cyclone had on Monday crossed Chennai which led to trees being uprooted, power lines being disrupted and the authorities evacuating people from low lying areas.
Bengaluru, Dec 13: Cyclone Vardah will reach Karnataka today according to the Indian Meteorological Department's observatory in Goa. The cyclone is expected to pass through Goa on December 14, the department also said.
According to M L Sahu, the director of the IMD's observatory in Goa, Vardah will pass through South Goa on Wednesday which would lead to a rise in temperature and light rains in the state from December 14 onwards.
The cyclone had on Monday crossed Chennai which led to trees being uprooted, power lines being disrupted and the authorities evacuating people from low lying areas. Latest reports also suggested that four persons had died in Tamil Nadu- two in Chennai and one each in Nagapattinam and Kancheepuram.
The National Disaster Management Authority or the NDMA has warned people not to venture out as rains and winds are likely to intensify. In Chennai schools and colleges will remain shut on Tuesday. The centre too has cautioned Tamil Nadu to maintain a strict vigil as heavy rainfall is expected.
Meanwhile in Andhra Pradesh, Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu has advised fishermen not to venture out into the sea for the next 36 hours. Naidu said that he is monitoring the situation through teleconference with top officials.
