Cyclone Fengal: Air Travel Chaos In Tamil Nadu, IndiGo Warns Passengers
As Cyclone Fengal strengthens in the southwest Bay of Bengal, it's set to bring heavy rains and adverse weather conditions to Tamil Nadu. The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) is closely working with state agencies to ensure the safety of those at sea, advising fishing boats to return to harbour. This development comes as the cyclone, which has been moving slowly north-northwestwards, threatens to intensify further.
IndiGo Airlines has issued a travel advisory due to the persisting unfavorable weather conditions caused by Cyclone Fengal. The advisory impacts flights to and from Chennai, Tuticorin, Madurai, Tiruchirappalli, and Salem. The airline took to X to announce, "#6ETravelAdvisory: The weather conditions remain largely unchanged and continue to be unfavourable, with flights to/from #Chennai, #Tuticorin, #Madurai, #Tiruchirappalli & #Salem still impacted." IndiGo also advised passengers to stay informed about their flight status through their provided link, emphasizing the importance of being prepared for smooth travel.

Weather Challenges and the State's Response
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has been monitoring the deep depression, noting its gradual north-northwest movement. According to the IMD, "The deep depression over Southwest Bay of Bengal moved slowly north-northwestwards with a speed of 3 kmph during past 6 hours and lay centred at 1730 hours IST of today, the 27th November 2024 over the same region near latitude 8.9°N and longitude 82.1°E, about 100 km east-northeast of Trincomalee, 320 km southeast of Nagappattinam, 420 km southeast of Puducherry and 500 km south-southeast of Chennai." The IMD also predicts that the cyclone will continue its trajectory, potentially intensifying and affecting the northern Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coasts around the morning of 30 November.
The consequences of Cyclone Fengal's approach are already evident in Tamil Nadu, where intermittent rains have impacted agricultural areas. The Cauvery delta region has seen standing paddy crops suffer damage due to the rain, with estimates suggesting at least 2,000 acres of crops have been affected. This situation has raised concerns among farmers in several areas including Tiruvarur and Mayiladuthurai.
In response to the inclement weather and its potential impacts, Puducherry has taken proactive measures to ensure public safety. Education Minister Arumugam Namassivayam announced a holiday for all educational institutions in Puducherry and Karaikal on 28 November. Furthermore, Chief Minister N Rangasamy convened an emergency meeting to review the situation and coordinate the preparedness of various departments to handle the ongoing rains and potential impacts of the cyclone.
As Cyclone Fengal continues its path towards Tamil Nadu, both state and central authorities are taking necessary steps to mitigate the effects of the cyclone and ensure the safety of the populace. The collaborative efforts of the ICG, IMD, local governments, and airlines like IndiGo highlight the comprehensive approach to managing the challenges posed by such natural calamities.
