At least four students were killed and over 60 injured in a stampede during the annual festival at Cochin University in Kochi, India, on Saturday night.

Stampede During Musical Festival
The incident occurred just before renowned singer Nikita Gandhi was scheduled to perform at a musical festival in the open-air auditorium of the Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT). According to State Health Minister Veena George, two boys and two girls lost their lives in the stampede, while more than 60 others are receiving treatment at Kalamassery Medical College Hospital and nearby hospitals.
Four of the injured students are reported to be in critical condition. ADGP M R Ajith Kumar stated that the audience rushed towards the auditorium using the stairs when there was a sudden downpour, leading to a stampede and subsequent deaths.
Overcrowding and Lack of Safety Measures
The annual festival was scheduled from November 24 to November 26, and the musical event was organized at an auditorium with a capacity of 1,000 to 1,500 people. While the auditorium was partially filled, the sudden downpour caused panic among the students, leading to the tragedy.
Initial reports suggested that the stampede occurred during Nikitha Gandhi's musical performance, but officials later clarified that the singer had not yet begun her performance when the incident took place. Eyewitnesses reported that while entry to the program was restricted to ticket holders, several local residents had gathered outside the auditorium during the musical show.
Government Response
In the wake of the tragedy, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan held an emergency meeting at a government guest house in Kozhikode and condoled the death of the students. He announced the cancellation of all cultural and art events planned in connection with the ongoing Nava Kerala Sadas program in the northern district on Sunday.
Ministers P Rajeev and R Bindhu were deputed to rush to the campus in Kalamassery to coordinate various measures, and the Chief Minister directed officials to ensure proper treatment for all the injured. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also expressed his condolences to the bereaved families and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
The stampede at Cochin University has raised concerns about safety measures and crowd management at such events. The incident highlights the need for strict adherence to safety protocols and emergency preparedness to prevent such tragedies in the future.
