Vadodara, April 7: It took her just 10 minutes and a wooden washing paddle to ward off the 13-feet crocodile that was dragging her 19-year old girl into the water.

A mother can do anything for her child, they say, but this extraordinary woman Diwalinen Vankar (58) made a choice between life and death for her daughter.

She had gone to wash clothes in the banks of the Vishwamitri River, 40 kilometres from Vadodara, to wash clothes. As they were placing the linen for drying, a mugger got hold of Kanta's right leg and started dragging her in the water. When pulling Kanta to safety failed, Vankar grabbed the washing paddle and started hitting it on the head when it started to roll into the water.

"Her leg was trapped between the piercing teeth as she cried in pain, her hands were scratching the river bank to get a grip but it didn't let her go. It took me 10 minutes to finally free her from its jaws," she said.

Villagers came to her aide, hearing the commotion and took Kanta to the hospital where she was treated for minor injuries and then discharged.

"I thank God for saving my daughter. The injuries are not that serious and doctors say she will be fine in sometime," she said. However, relating her plight, she further added that she and many women like her are forced to wash clothes at the river bank as there was no water and electricity in the village.

With more than 200 ferocious crocodiles in the river, the wildlife officers have asked the people to stay clear of the banks, but to no use.
