CPI(M) Leader's Murder Triggers Statewide Shutdown in Tripura
Badal Shill, a CPI(M) leader critically injured in an attack in South Tripura's Rajnagar area, succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment at a hospital on Saturday, police reported. The opposition CPI(M) accused BJP-backed goons of murdering Shill, a zilla parishad candidate for the panchayat polls, and announced a 12-hour statewide bandh on Sunday in protest.

SP of South Tripura Ashok Kumar Sinha stated that Shill was attacked by an unidentified group on Friday evening. "Police visited the spot immediately after learning about the incident. The victim was not in a condition to tell the police anything. However, we lodged a suo motu case. An investigation is underway," he said.
Statewide Bandh and Political Reactions
Left Front convenor Narayan Kar announced that the statewide bandh would commence at 6 am and continue until 6 pm. Addressing a press conference late at night, BJP state spokesperson Nabendu Bhattacharjee expressed condolences: "Every death causes shock. We convey heartfelt grief and sympathy to the family of Badal Shill, who died while undergoing treatment."
Bhattacharjee also alleged that opposition parties were attempting to create unrest ahead of the panchayat elections. "They are not being able to find candidates for the elections, and the BJP can’t arrange candidates for them," he said. He added that the BJP would oppose the bandh as it disrupts normal life and assured support to the government in maintaining order on Sunday.
Details of the Attack
Shill's family alleged that he was attacked with machetes, sticks, and other weapons at Rajnagar market. AIG Law and Order Ananta Das confirmed that Shill died while undergoing treatment at GB Pant Hospital in Agartala. "His post-mortem examination has been completed and the body will be handed over to his family," Das said.
CPI(M) state secretary Jitendra Chaudhury, also the leader of the opposition in the assembly, stated that Shill had sustained severe head injuries during the attack. "This is not the death of Badal Shill; it is the murder of democracy by the BJP. I appeal to the people to protest this brutal murder and save democracy," he said.
Upcoming Panchayat Elections
Panchayat elections are scheduled for August 8, with vote counting set for August 10. Shill had filed his nomination papers for these elections on July 11. The state BJP assured that police would investigate the case thoroughly and take necessary actions.
The incident has heightened tensions between political parties in Tripura as they prepare for the upcoming elections. Both sides have accused each other of trying to manipulate public sentiment for electoral gain.
The situation remains tense as authorities continue their investigation into Shill's death while political leaders call for calm and justice.
