COVID-19 Vaccination Safe For Young Adults, No Link to Sudden Deaths: Top Medical Body

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) clarified that COVID-19 vaccination does not elevate the risk of unexplained sudden death among young adults in India.

However, it highlighted that previous COVID-19 hospitalisation, a family history of sudden death, and specific lifestyle habits contribute to a higher likelihood of unexplained sudden death.

Amidst a series of tragic events involving sudden deaths of young adults, notably including the untimely passing of renowned Malayalam TV actor Dr. Priya due to a sudden cardiac arrest, a study was initiated. These distressing incidents, coupled with similar occurrences among healthy adults in India, sparked concerns about potential connections to COVID-19 or the administered vaccinations. This prompted researchers to delve into the matter, initiating the ICMR study.

Entitled 'Factors associated with sudden deaths among adults aged 18-45 years in India-a multicentric matched case-control study,' the research aimed to identify potential factors contributing to these sudden fatalities. Initial findings suggested that a history of severe COVID-19 infection, indulgence in binge drinking, or the use of recreational drugs or substances might have played roles in deaths occurring within a mere 48-hour window. Although the study reached completion earlier this month, its formal release is still pending.

The study focused on apparently healthy individuals aged 18-45 years, devoid of underlying health conditions, who tragically succumbed to unexplained sudden deaths between October 1, 2021, and March 31, 2023.

Previously, Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya referenced the insights gleaned from the ICMR study, cautioning individuals who had previously endured severe COVID-19 episodes. He emphasized the importance of avoiding excessive physical strain for a period of one to two years post-infection to mitigate the risk of heart attacks and cardiac arrests.
