Congress Endorses Independent Candidate Rajesh Latkar Following Madhurima Raje's Withdrawal in Kolhapur North
The Congress party has decided to back Rajesh Latkar, an independent candidate, in the Kolhapur North assembly constituency. This decision came after Madhurima Raje Chhatrapati, their official candidate, withdrew her nomination unexpectedly. Local leader Satej Patil expressed disappointment over this sudden withdrawal, which left the party in a difficult position. Elections in Maharashtra are scheduled for November 20.

Kolhapur North is traditionally a stronghold for the Congress in western Maharashtra. Madhurima Raje is married to Malojirao Chhatrapati, the younger son of Kolhapur MP Shahu Maharaj Chhatrapati. On Tuesday, Shahu Chhatrapati, along with Satej Patil and other prominent Congress figures, convened to discuss and ultimately decide on supporting Latkar's candidacy.
Congress Leadership's Decision
Shahu Chhatrapati stated, "We have decided to move forward with Latkar's candidacy. Congress in-charge for Maharashtra Ramesh Chennithala and senior Congress leader K C Venugopal had advised us to make a decision. Accordingly, Satej Patil convened today's meeting in which I am proposing Latkar's name." He urged party members to rally behind Latkar and secure his victory.
Rajesh Kshirsagar from Shiv Sena Mahayuti will be contesting against Latkar. Earlier, Shahu Chhatrapati clarified the reasons behind Madhurima Raje's withdrawal through a letter. The letter explained that her nomination was withdrawn as it was inappropriate to contest without grassroots support from Congress workers.
Internal Party Dynamics
The letter also mentioned that it was previously agreed that one family should not hold two political positions. Therefore, Latkar was initially chosen as the candidate but was later dropped due to internal opposition. After Raje received the ticket, Latkar filed his nomination as an independent candidate out of dissatisfaction.
Shahu Maharaj addressed rumours circulating on social media about his potential resignation as Lok Sabha MP following these events. He dismissed these rumours, clarifying that he had no intention of resigning from his position.
The Congress party's decision to support Rajesh Latkar reflects their strategy to maintain influence in Kolhapur North despite internal challenges. As the election date approaches, the focus will be on uniting party workers and ensuring a successful campaign for Latkar.
