Congress Criticizes Modi Government for Arresting NewsClick Founder Prabir Purkayastha Amid Alleged Undeclared Emergency
The arrest of NewsClick founder Prabir Purkayastha has ignited a political firestorm in India, with the Congress party accusing the Narendra Modi government of imposing an undeclared Emergency since 2014. The situation, they claim, is deteriorating as the current administration allegedly fears electoral defeat in 2024. This bold assertion was made by Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh on October 3rd.
Congress Criticizes Modi Government

Ramesh took to social media platform X to express his concern and dissent over Purkayastha's arrest. He drew attention to Gyan Prakash, a renowned historian at Princeton University who has penned an insightful account of India's controversial Emergency period from 1975-77 titled 'Emergency Chronicles'. In this book, Prakash lauds Purkayastha as a hero of resistance during that time.
According to Ramesh, "One such hero of the resistance that Dr Prakash describes in great detail is Prabir Purkayastha who later became an expert on energy policy. Today, the very same Prabir Purkayastha along with many others stands arrested by the Modi regime."
Allegations Against Journalists
In addition to criticizing the government for arresting Purkayastha, Ramesh also mentioned journalist Paranjoy Guha Thakurta in another post. He alleges that Thakurta is currently bearing the brunt of what he calls 'the Modani regime's vengeance' due to his persistent investigations into one of PM Modi’s favoured business groups.
The Delhi Police arrested NewsClick founder Purkayastha and HR head Amit Chakravarty after executing search operations across more than 30 locations and interrogating several journalists. The case was filed under unspecified charges, adding to the cloud of uncertainty and fear surrounding press freedom in India.
Underlying Tensions
This incident has highlighted the underlying tensions between the current government and sections of Indian media. Critics argue that this is part of a broader pattern where journalists critical of the Modi administration are targeted, thereby creating an atmosphere of intimidation and self-censorship among news outlets.
The arrest has also brought into focus once again the controversial period known as 'the Emergency' when civil liberties were curtailed in India. The Congress party's comparison of today's political climate with that dark phase in history indicates their belief that democratic norms may be under threat under the present regime.
In conclusion, Purkayastha's arrest serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by journalists in India today. As debates around press freedom continue to gain momentum amid allegations from opposition parties, it remains to be seen how this will impact public sentiment and electoral outcomes going forward. For now, these incidents underscore a growing concern over perceived attempts to stifle dissenting voices within Indian media by those wielding power.
