Congress Shows Confidence in Kashmir Elections Amidst Political Shifts

Antony Antony, a member of the Congress Screening Committee and MP from Pathanamthitta, expressed optimism about Congress's prospects in the upcoming Kashmir assembly elections. He stated that the departure of leaders like Ghulam Nabi Azad would not hinder the party's performance. Antony emphasised that Congress's position in the state remains strong and decisions regarding alliances will be made soon.

Reflecting on Congress's historical presence in Kashmir, Antony noted that the party has deep roots in the region and has governed it for an extended period. He mentioned, "Congress is the party that has been deeply rooted in Kashmir for all time. Congress is the one that ruled Kashmir for the longest time. This time we are facing the elections with full confidence."

The decision on forming alliances for the assembly elections will be taken by the party high command in the coming days. Antony explained that discussions on how to approach the elections and potential alliances are ongoing. "The party high command will discuss and decide on the alliance in the coming days," he said.

Despite recent setbacks, Antony remains confident about Congress's ability to make a comeback. He pointed out that the results of the last Lok Sabha elections indicate a desire among ordinary people for Congress to return to power. "Congress lives in the hearts of the people of India," he remarked.

Addressing concerns about Ghulam Nabi Azad's exit from Congress, Antony asserted that individual departures do not significantly impact the party. He stated, "Congress is an emotion that has shaped India as a nation. It is the movement, not the individuals, that is strong." He added that Ghulam Nabi's departure would not be a setback in the elections.

When asked about bringing Ghulam Nabi back, Antony deferred to national leadership, saying, "That is for the national leadership to decide. I don't have a clear idea about that."

Challenges Ahead

Antony acknowledged that finding potential candidates after a long period without elections poses challenges. However, he expressed confidence in overcoming these difficulties with his political experience. "It's definitely challenging," he admitted but remained optimistic about navigating these complexities.

The resurgence of terrorist attacks in Kashmir presents another challenge for election campaigns. Antony noted that such challenges have always existed in Kashmir and expressed determination to overcome them and move forward.

Expectations for Election Results

Regarding expectations for seat wins, Antony remained cautious as elections have just been announced. He indicated that discussions on this matter would take place at later stages. "All this will be discussed after many stages," he said.

Congress Optimistic on Kashmir Polls

In conclusion, Antony reiterated his confidence in Congress's prospects in Kashmir despite recent challenges and departures. He emphasised that decisions on alliances and candidate selection would be made soon, reflecting a strategic approach to upcoming elections.
