Congress Reveals Tamil Nadu Candidates for Lok Sabha Polls, Retains Key Figures
In a significant political development, the Congress party announced its candidates for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls in Tamil Nadu, slated for April 16. Among the notable names, Karti P Chidambaram and S Jothimani have been renominated to contest from Sivaganga and Karur constituencies, respectively. The list, unveiled on March 23, includes seven candidates for Tamil Nadu, highlighting the party's strategy to rely on its key MPs in crucial seats.

Former IAS officer Sasikant Senthil, who resigned from government service in 2019 citing concerns over the state of democracy, has been chosen to contest from the reserved Tiruvallur constituency. Senthil's political journey is noteworthy, having led the Congress election war room strategy during the 2023 Karnataka Assembly polls. His candidacy underscores the party's emphasis on governance and democratic values.
Karti P Chidambaram, son of veteran Congress leader and former Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram, will once again represent the party in Sivaganga, a constituency he won in 2019. The decision to renominate him reflects the party's confidence in his electoral appeal and political acumen.
Similarly, incumbents like Jothimani and B Manickam Tagore have been given another chance to contest from their respective constituencies of Karur and Virudhunagar. Dr K Vishnu Prasad, who served as an MP for Arani and is also a former MLA, has been nominated from Cuddalore this time around. Vijay Vasanth, who succeeded in a bypoll in Kanniyakumari in 2021 following his father H Vasanthakumar's demise, will also seek re-election from the same constituency.
K Gopinath, a former MLA, has been selected to represent Congress from Krishnagiri. This selection process is part of a seat-sharing agreement with the DMK, under which Congress was allotted nine seats in Tamil Nadu—Sivaganga, Cuddalore, Krishnagiri, Kanniyakumari, Tiruvallur SC, Mayiladuthurai, Tirunelveli, Karur, and Virudhunagar. Additionally, Congress has been allocated the lone Puducherry segment as well.
The announcement of candidates is a crucial step for Congress as it prepares for the Lok Sabha polls. By renominating experienced MPs and introducing candidates with significant administrative backgrounds like Sasikant Senthil, the party aims to strengthen its electoral prospects in Tamil Nadu. The strategic selection of candidates reflects Congress's focus on governance issues and its commitment to democratic principles.
