Congress Unveils Fourth List of Lok Sabha Candidates, Ajay Rai to Face Modi in Varanasi

New Delhi, March 23 - In a strategic move ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, the Congress party unveiled its fourth list of candidates, introducing 45 new names into the fray. Among the notable decisions, the party has chosen Ajay Rai to contest from Varanasi against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This marks Rai's third attempt to secure the seat, having faced defeats in both 2014 and 2019 by significant margins.

Additionally, the Congress has placed its bets on veteran leader Digvijaya Singh from Madhya Pradesh's Rajgarh and has roped in Lal Singh from Jammu and Kashmir's Udhampur to challenge Union Minister Jitendra Singh. Maharashtra's Nagpur will see MLA Vikas Thakare going head-to-head with Union Minister Nitin Gadkari.

The party's strategy encompasses a broad geographic spread, announcing candidates across several states including Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, Manipur, Jammu and Kashmir, West Bengal, Assam, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Mizoram, and Chhattisgarh. A significant alliance has been formed with the Rashtriya Loktantrik Party (RLP) in Rajasthan to strengthen its position in the state following recent electoral setbacks.

In Uttar Pradesh, where the Congress is collaborating with the Samajwadi Party (SP) for 17 seats, it has declared candidates for nine constituencies. This includes Danish Ali from Amroha and Imran Masood from Saharanpur among others. The anticipation continues around Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra's potential candidacies from Amethi and Raebareli respectively.

The Congress's decision-making reflects a blend of experience and new blood. In Tamil Nadu, Karti Chidambaram has been renominated from Sivaganga alongside other key figures such as Manickam Tagore and S Jothimani. Madhya Pradesh sees Digvijaya Singh aiming for a comeback from Rajgarh after his previous loss in Bhopal during the 2019 elections.

Other significant nominations include Kawasi Lakhma from Bastar and Raman Bhalla from Jammu. The party has also shown faith in new faces like Alfred Kanngam S Arthur from Outer Manipur ST and Anil Chopra from Jaipur Rural. With these announcements, the Congress has now declared a total of 183 candidates for the upcoming seven-phase Lok Sabha polls starting April 19.

The Congress's strategic candidate placements across key constituencies reflect its intent to make significant electoral gains. The collaboration with regional parties like the RLP in Rajasthan underscores its efforts to consolidate support bases and challenge dominant political forces. As the election dates draw closer, all eyes will be on these candidates and their campaigns in their respective battlegrounds.
