Congress leader in police custody
Silchar, Feb 6: Seven people, including Silchar block Congress president, have landed in police net for their alleged involvement in smuggling suspected iridium objects.

The four were arrested on Tuesday evening from College Road locality of Hailakandi, said SP (Hailakandi) Brajenjit Sinha. Three large prism-like objects made of thick and coloured glasses were confiscated from the car in which they were travelling.

The arrested have been identified as Gurudas Sinha (46), president of Silchar block Congress committee and a resident of Bhakatpur village in Cachar district, Saroj Kumar Sinha (32) of Boaljur village in the same district, Diganta Chetia (27) and Rahamatul Ali (42) from Sivasagar district.

During interrogation, the arrested said they collected the objects from two persons called Hussain Ahmed and Bilal Uddin of Ramshantipur village in Katlicherra block of Hailakandi near the Mizoram border. They were supposed to hand them over to two other persons somewhere in Nagaland.

Police have launched a search for the duo. On Wednesday, when police reached the village, their houses were found locked, a police officer said.
