Congress Divided as Anand Sharma Challenges Rahul Gandhi's Caste Census Plan
Anand Sharma, a senior Congress leader, has expressed disagreement with Rahul Gandhi's proposal to conduct a caste census if their party wins power. Sharma conveyed his concerns through a letter to Mallikarjun Kharge, the Congress National President.
He believes that such a move could be seen as undermining the legacies of former Prime Ministers Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi. Sharma emphasized that the Congress party has historically not supported caste-based politics, arguing it could harm democracy.

Sharma's letter suggests that a caste census might be interpreted as disrespecting the values upheld by Indira and Rajiv Gandhi. He cited statements and slogans from both leaders to support his stance. For instance, he gave reference of Indira Gandhi's 1980 slogan, "Neither on caste nor on lineage, the stamp will be on the hand," and a statement by Rajiv Gandhi warning against the dangers of casteism in politics. Sharma's bold move to question the party's current direction highlights a significant internal disagreement.
Rahul Gandhi has positioned the caste census as a major national issue, following a report from Bihar last year. He advocates for equal rights corresponding to population sizes and proposes constitutional amendments to remove the Supreme Court's 50% reservation cap. Throughout his 'Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra' from Manipur to Mumbai, Gandhi has consistently promoted the caste census as a core policy of the Congress party.
However, Sharma argues that focusing on a caste census as an electoral promise won't address unemployment or reduce inequality. He insists that the Congress has always prioritized social and economic factors for affirmative action based on internal discussions and debates. According to Sharma, deviating from this fundamental policy on such a sensitive issue could have nationwide implications.
Sharma also highlighted his commitment to transparency, democratic discussion, and freedom of expression within the Congress framework. It's worth noting that he is part of 'Group-23', a faction within Congress that has somewhat challenged the Gandhi family's leadership. This group has seen several prominent members leave the party. Sharma's letter underscores a critical viewpoint within Congress, sparking debate over its future direction and policies.
