Congress' Elite Arrogance Exposed: Sonia Gandhi's 'Poor Lady' Jibe at Tribal President Sparks Outrage
The 2025 Budget session began on February 1 with President Droupadi Murmu's powerful address.
However, Congress MP Sonia Gandhi sparked controversy by calling the President a "poor lady."

Referring to Murmu's speech, Sonia remarked, "The President was completely exhausted by the end. Poor lady, she could barely speak."
The Rashtrapati Bhavan strongly condemned Sonia Gandhi's remark, calling it disrespectful and damaging to the dignity of the President's office. It asserted that President Murmu, a representative of marginalised communities and farmers, remained committed to voicing their concerns, and "such commitment can never be exhausting."
PM Modi's Response
Prime Minister Narendra Modi criticised Sonia Gandhi's remark, labeling it a direct insult to both the nation's first tribal woman President and women in general.

"The Congress royal family is now openly disrespecting the President," said PM Modi. He accused Sonia Gandhi of revealing the party's disdain for tribal communities.
Congress and Its Anti-Tribal History
Sonia Gandhi's comment exposed Congress' long-standing prejudices against tribals and individuals from humble backgrounds. The unease over a tribal woman holding the country's highest office underscores Congress' discomfort with India's shift away from dynastic politics.
Congress has a history of neglecting tribal interests, failing to acknowledge tribal heroes, and undermining welfare schemes for these communities. Its discriminatory track record is evident in its indifference toward tribal rights. The dismissal of President Murmu reflects this very mindset.
Previous Insults
In July 2024, Congress MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury had referred to President Murmu as "Rashtrapatni," turning her position into a gender-based insult. His comments exposed the party's feudal and racist outlook, which struggles to accept a tribal woman leading the nation.
A Reflection of Congress' Elite Mindset
Would Congress have shown similar disrespect if the President came from a privileged background? The party's dynastic and elitist worldview cannot accept a tribal leader representing real India instead of elitist Lutyens' politics.
Sonia Gandhi's remark insulted millions of ST citizens who see Murmu's rise as a symbol of progress and representation at the highest level of governance. The Congress party continues to demonstrate its struggle to acknowledge this profound societal change.
