Congress demands arrest of Assam BJP MP for comparing Nehru-Gandhi with ‘garbage’
After a BJP MP from Assam compared Nehru-Gandhi with "garbage", the Congress demanded his arrest.
Guwahati, Oct 23: The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the opposition Congress in Assam have locked horns after a member of Parliament (MP) belonging to the saffron party allegedly compared Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru with "garbage".
The man in the midst of a 'political' row in the state, BJP MP Kamakhya Prasad Tasa, who represents the Jorhat constituency, said his comments at a rally in Sivasagar district's Sonari on Saturday have been "misrepresented".

"The Congress has pushed the Nehru-Gandhi garbage into the minds of people over the years and there is now no space for any other theory," Tasa said at the rally which was attended by Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal too.
The Congress has filed a police complaint against Tasa and demanded his arrest. On Sunday, the opposition also hosted a state-wide protest against Tasa's "garbage" comment.
"The MP ... described Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi as garbage. Therefore, we seek his immediate arrest and prosecution under the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC)," read the FIR.
"Comparing Jawaharlal Nehru and Mahatma Gandhi with garbage is an unpardonable offence and we demand his immediate arrest for the crime he has committed," said Assam Congress leader Ripun Bora.
Tasa in his defence said: "I was wrongly interpreted. I have never taken the names of Nehru and Gandhi in the manner it has been projected. I said a lot of garbage has been drilled in the names of Nehru and Gandhi."
